The Leon County Sheriff's Office Violent Crimes Unit is comprised of one sergeant, seven detectives, and one secretary. The unit works a wide variety of cases ranging from harassing phone calls to homicides. In the calender year 2006 the unit worked 1,745 cases. Of these, 1,640 were successfully closed. That is a clearance rate of 94%.
In the calender year 2006 the Violent Crimes Unit worked two homicides. Both were successfully closed.
The unit works closely with other units within this agency, and several outside the agency, including the Medical Examiner's Office, FDLE, Florida Department of Children and Families, and the Child Protection Team.
The Violent Crimes Unit is a shining example of dedication and teamwork. This is further demonstrated by the fact that a majority of the unit has secondary positions within the agency by being members of specialized units such as SWAT, Hostage Negotiation Team, and Honor Guard.
