The Leon County Sheriff's Office Vice Unit is a 10 person team, which mainly works vice and narcotics related criminal activity. The unit handles a wide variety of drug activity from the street level dealer to large scale drug rings. These drugs include, but are not limited to: cocaine, marijuana, MDMA, methamphetamine, and LSD. In 2006, the Leon County Sheriff's Office Vice Unit seized over 8 million dollars worth of drugs, and over a million dollars worth of assets related to drug cases.
The Vice Unit also works as a support group for other investigative units within the Sheriff's Office. This work includes mobile surveillance, stakeouts and other covert specialized operations. The unit works closely with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, DEA, ATF, and the Tallahassee Police Department.
The Leon County Sheriff's Office actively participates in the North Florida Clandestine Laboratory Response Team. This team is responsible for clandestine lab clean up in the following counties: Leon, Gadsden, Liberty, Wakulla, Jefferson, Franklin and Taylor. This involves specialized training and required recertification. The Sheriff's Office currently has five certified lab response team members.
During the calendar year of 2006, our region dismantled 23 clandestine meth labs. This is an increase of nearly 600% from the previous year. During the course of these investigations, strict state and federal guidelines must be followed. These guidelines are required for the safety of individuals working in the clean up of the toxic waste sites as well as the hazardous material removal and storage. The average time needed to effectively and efficiently investigate these sites varies, but the national average is at least eight hours per lab site.
